Israeli government spokesman David Mensah said Monday that Israel condemns the “utterly shocking” and violent protests against Jews carried out on Sunday by pro-Palestinian activists outside a synagogue in Los Angeles, California.
Breitbart News reported that a pro-Palestinian mob blocked the entrance to Adas Torah, an Orthodox synagogue in the heart of the predominantly Jewish Pico Robertson neighborhood, preventing local residents from attending a conference on Israeli real estate investments.
There were violent clashes between pro-Palestinian activists who arrived to protect the synagogue and pro-Israel counter-demonstrators. Security guards and Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) also clashed with the pro-Palestinian activists.
Speaking at a news conference, Mensah condemned the “very shocking footage of Jewish people being attacked.” [and] “Violence on the Streets of Los Angeles”
He added: “Where will they attack? Outside the synagogues… This is Jew-hatred… Even if you are on the Palestinian side, why go outside the synagogues where Jews go to pray?”
He said Israel was confident that U.S. authorities would take “strong and decisive action to protect the Jewish community” and would provide any necessary support.
Mensah had this message for Jews in Los Angeles and around the world:
The way to combat this Jew-hatred is not to hide behind ever-higher walls, but for Jews to wear their identity with pride.
…
We have faced many difficult times before, and we will get through this one as we have gotten through all the others.
California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, both Democrats, waited hours to respond, condemning the anti-Semitic violence only after Breitbart News published an article pointing out their failed response.
