Israel Mocks Greta Thunberg Following IDF's Capture of 'Selfie Yacht'

Israeli Foreign Ministry Comments on Activist Incident

On Monday, the Israeli Foreign Ministry (MFA) took a jab at Swedish activist Greta Samberg by sharing a photo of her in front of an Israeli flag after her detention aboard a ship attempting to deliver aid to Gaza.

The Israeli MFA had previously promised to prevent the ship, named Madreen, from reaching the coastline, labeling it a “selfie yacht.”

This vessel, operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, was carrying numerous activists along with humanitarian supplies. Israel has enforced a naval blockade in the Gaza Strip since 2007.

The MFA reported that those on board were quickly intercepted by the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) and were provided with sandwiches and water.

The ship is now docked at Ashdod Port, Israel.

Some Israeli advocates criticized the government for being too lenient toward Samberg and other activists who openly criticize Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Conversely, some social media users found humor in the MFA’s posts, particularly noting the irony of Samberg standing in front of the Israeli flag.

The MFA described the yachts as “media gimmicks for publicity” and emphasized the need for humanitarian aid to be delivered through formal and coordinated channels.

As of now, those on the yacht are expected to return to their home countries.
