Israel Needs ‘to Show Some Restraint’ and ‘Have Some Diplomacy’

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) said in an interview Friday with CBS affiliate KOIN 6 in Portland that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “is going to have to show restraint and find a way to unite his people” regarding Israel’s killing of some Hamas leaders and its possible impact on ceasefire negotiations. “Prime Minister Netanyahu in particular is going to have to use his diplomatic muscle to bring about restraint,” he said.

Co-host Elizabeth Din asked, “So now, on to Gaza, we want to talk, of course, about the setbacks to peace talks that have been caused by the killing of a top Hamas leader. With so many people pinning their hopes on peace, what do you think can at least be done going forward?”

Wyden responded: “Certainly Bibi Netanyahu is a central figure in this issue and he’s going to have to find a way to show restraint and bring people together. He’s a wartime leader. Everybody understands that. But this is a time for diplomacy, to bring restraint and try to bring people together.”[ing] [to] “We have to figure out how to calm things down. The problem was clear from the beginning that this was going to be a clash between Hamas and Israel. Now that clash has escalated, and Bibi Netanyahu in particular will have to use diplomatic means to bring about restraint.”
