On Friday, Germany expressed its disapproval of Israel’s halt on arms shipments intended for use in Gaza.
During a meeting with German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shared his disappointment directly.
Netanyahu stated, “Instead of supporting Israel’s legitimate fight against Hamas—responsible for some of the most horrific attacks on Jews since the Holocaust—Germany will reward it with weapons for Hamas terrorism,” as noted in his official post.
He further remarked that Israel does not aim to annex Gaza but seeks to liberate it from Hamas in order to establish a peaceful government.
In light of increased operations in Gaza, Merz emphasized the need for the government to take a stand.
The German leader noted that the recent escalation of military actions by Israeli forces complicates the path toward achieving peace goals.
As a result, the German government announced it would not permit the export of military weapons that could be used in Gaza until further notice.
While Merz acknowledged Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas, he stressed that pursuing a ceasefire is Germany’s top priority.
He expressed deep concern over the ongoing suffering of civilians in Gaza, stating that the planned attacks increase Israel’s responsibility to ensure aid access for organizations like the UN and other NGOs.
Earlier in July, Israeli officials indicated they would resume air drops for humanitarian aid but denied allegations of a humanitarian crisis, which have been reported by advocacy groups and journalists on the ground.
In response to the conflict, France, Canada, and the UK have recognized Palestine as a sovereign state.
