Israel Will Enter Rafah, Even If Biden Says No

Israeli Strategy Minister Ron Dermer said Thursday that Israel will enter the Gaza Strip town of Rafah to annihilate the last remaining Hamas battalion, even if the United States under President Joe Biden objects.

Mr. Dermer spoke about former George W. Bush administration official, startup nation Podcast with author Dan Senor.

The Times of Israel points out that:

A senior Israeli official said Thursday that Israel will seize Rafah even if there is a rift with the United States, saying the displaced-filled Gaza city hosts a quarter of the terrorist group’s fighters. He said it was Hamas’ last stronghold.

Dermer, a former ambassador to the United States, said Israel would listen to America’s thoughts on Rafah, but the city on the Gaza-Egypt border would be occupied regardless of whether the allies reach an agreement.

“Even if Israel is forced to fight alone, that will happen. Even if the whole world, including the United States, is against Israel, we will fight until the battle is won.”

Dermer’s comments are noteworthy because he is one of the negotiators. Was chosen Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to meet with the White House next week to discuss the Biden administration’s concerns about Rafah’s attacks on Hamas, which Biden opposes.

Prime Minister Netanyahu characterized the talks as primarily focused on humanitarian concerns, including the evacuation of civilians. The White House characterized the talks as one over whether Israel should conduct military operations in Rafah at all.
