Israeli embassy in New York ‘deeply troubled’ by ‘rise in anti-Semitic incidents’ at Columbia, NYU

The Israeli Embassy in New York City told Fox News Digital on Tuesday that it is “deeply troubled” by the “recent increase in anti-Semitic incidents” at schools such as Columbia University and New York University.

“Such behavior violates the principles of free speech and has no place in academia,” the Israeli consulate in New York said.

“We have seen a recent increase in anti-Semitic incidents at educational institutions such as Columbia University and New York University, where Jewish, Israeli, and pro-Israel students have been targeted and denied a safe educational environment. We are deeply concerned about this and strongly condemn it.”

“This display of hatred is unacceptable. The organization’s leadership must urgently address and correct these actions,” the embassy added. “For too long, recent events have been ignored without significant intervention, which is now more important than ever for the safety and well-being of all students.”

The embassy also told Fox News Digital that it “trusts that the relevant authorities and institutions will take the necessary steps to address and prevent all forms of discrimination on campus.”

Anti-Israel protests on New York University’s campus turned violent Monday night, with demonstrators throwing bottles at police officers who were called to the scene to disperse the unruly crowd, officials said.

New York City police officials confirmed to Fox News on Tuesday that 133 protesters were arrested after police tried to remove them from campus using zip ties and flex cuffs. They were taken to police headquarters by bus and charged with trespassing, the official added.

At Columbia University, students were told Tuesday that classes will go virtual or hybrid amid continuing safety concerns stemming from anti-Israel protests.

The new guidelines said all courses at Morningside’s main campus will transition to hybrid learning “until the end of each school’s spring 2024 semester.”
