Israeli mother appeals to the Trump administration to return her son's body from Gaza

Mother’s Heartfelt Plea: Retelling the Tragic Story of Her Son

On October 7, 2023, over 250 individuals were taken captive and brought to Gaza. After enduring more than two years of anguish, I find myself reflecting on the last two years. Among those affected is my son, Ran.

Each morning, I wake up and count the days. It’s been over 790 days since he was taken from us—more than 790 nights filled with yearning, a battle to stay strong, and a commitment to hold onto hope. There’s a pride swelling in my heart for my son, who is nothing short of heroic.

Ran never faltered when faced with danger. Just days after suffering a shoulder injury from a motorcycle accident, he chose to wear his police uniform the moment the alarm rang. Despite needing rest for an upcoming surgery, he rushed toward the chaos. As a member of the police’s anti-terrorism unit, he couldn’t just stand by when help was desperately needed.

He jumped into a car with a friend and drove straight into the turmoil. They saved numerous individuals from the Nova Music Festival and helped those attempting to reach fellow officers under siege at Kibbutz Al-Mim. Ran displayed remarkable bravery, fighting valiantly alongside his team—wounded in both leg and arm yet determined to protect his community. This dedication earned him the title of the Shield of Armim.

Tragically, two weeks later, I received the news that he had been taken to Gaza. Then, on January 24, 2024, we learned he had been killed and his body remains there. I often dream he might still be alive, despite the odds stacked against us. He once told me, “I’ll come back a hero.” I remind him he already is one. I know it’s a long shot, but if I let go of hope, I might not recover from the heartbreak.

When the nightmare began, there were 255 hostages. Our families came together, supporting each other through unbearable moments. Each time someone was released, it felt like gaining a part of ourselves back. Now, the last two men still trapped in Gaza weigh heavily on us. I worry about my orchids; despite bringing many home with me, I feel we might leave them behind. It’s a weight I can’t shake: when will our turn come?

Almost two months have passed since our collective prayers were answered. With the miraculous help of President Trump’s administration, almost all hostages were returned home, freeing those who survived after suffering tremendous hardships. The deceased were brought back for dignified burials, giving families closure. We witnessed families reunited, a nation starting to heal again.

Recently, we had a meeting with Mike Huckabee, the U.S. ambassador to Israel. His kindness and empathy touched us deeply. He reassured us that the U.S. government would remain with us until every last hostage returned, a sentiment we cherish. With only two still unaccounted for, we trust they will continue to advocate for us.

Yet, Ran and Sudisak remain stuck in darkness. Each time there’s a rumor of a mission in Gaza, my heart races. Cautious optimism mixes with fear and dread. I experience anxiety and panic like never before. The sound of ringing phones and cars pulling up outside sends shivers through me.

Hamas claims they are looking for the last two hostages, but little seems to be changing. They toy with our emotions, all while our families continue to suffer. This must end. They know where the hostages are. Pressure must be applied to fulfill this deal—how can we move forward while Ran and Sudisak are still imprisoned? Healing feels impossible without them.

To everyone who helped in bringing home the other 253 hostages, I urge you not to forget them. Please continue to fight for Ran and Sudisak. Don’t give up now, when we’re so close.

Ran-chan, I promise your story will be shared widely. People will recognize your bravery, your struggles, and your unwavering spirit.

We will see you home.
