Israeli Leaders Criticize Yair Golan’s Remarks
On Tuesday, Yair Golan, a leftist politician and chairman of Israel’s Democratic Party, faced backlash from both government and opposition leaders following his remarks during a radio interview. He stated that “a sane country… won’t kill babies because of hobbies.” Golan emphasized that rational nations do not wage wars against civilians or engage in expulsions.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned Golan, accusing him of promoting “wild agitation” against Israeli forces and diminishing the honor of the Israeli army, suggesting that Golan’s claims echo antisemitic sentiments against the state. Golan’s comments were also met with disapproval from members of the opposition. Opposition leader Eia Rapid defended Israeli fighters, calling them heroes who protect lives.
Education Minister Joab Kisch went further, urging an investigation into Golan’s comments. He pointed out that Golan is not a member of the Knesset and thus does not have immunity, indicating that the Prime Minister’s legal advisor is expected to look into potential instigation charges against him.
Golan has been a vocal critic of Netanyahu’s government. In November 2024, he accused Netanyahu of prioritizing his political ambitions when he dismissed the former Minister of Defense.
