Monday’s Israeli airstrike, which took out Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) commander Mohammad Reza Zahedi, one other general, and five officials, was the most significant against Iran since General Qasem Soleimani in 2020. It was an airstrike.
era of israel I got it. Zahedi was the “most senior commander of the Revolutionary Guard’s Quds Force in Syria,” the statement said. The airstrike also killed Vice President Mohammad Haji Rahimi. Syria is a key route for Iranian forces to reach Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
The media has described Zahedi’s death as an escalation. But Iranian proxies have escalated their attacks, with Iranian-controlled Iraqi militias claiming credit for Sunday’s drone attack on the Israeli naval base in Eilat.
Monday’s airstrike, like the Soleimani attack, could act as a deterrent against further Iranian escalation.
As Breitbart News reported at the time, President Donald Trump ordered the airstrike on January 2, 2020, against General Soleimani, the leader of the Revolutionary Guards Quds Force, who was commanding Iran’s terror proxies across the Middle East. was murdered.
General Soleimani was killed in a US airstrike at Baghdad airport, killing 10 military personnel but not a single civilian casualty. The airstrikes came after Iranian-controlled militias began threatening the U.S. embassy and other targets.
Soleimani’s death was a major setback for Iran. The administration retaliated by firing cruise missiles at U.S. military bases in Iraq, but was careful not to kill any U.S. soldiers to avoid risking further escalation by President Trump’s unpredictability.
Some U.S. soldiers suffered concussions and other head injuries due to the impact of the incoming missiles, but there were no other casualties. (Then-candidate Joe Biden, who opposed the Soleimani attack, highlighted these injuries.)
Iran has vowed to respond. Friday is Quds Day in Iran, the last Friday of Ramadan and a day of heightened anti-Israel hatred.
