Israel's ambassador to the UN alerts that Iran is exploiting Hezbollah to undermine discussions

UN Ambassador Danny Danon Promises Action Following Attacks

Israel’s UN ambassador, Danny Danon, has strongly denied claims from a confidential intelligence report suggesting that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is extending military operations for political reasons. Instead, he pointed to the recent loss of five Israeli soldiers as evidence of the critical need to continue efforts to dismantle Iranian proxy sites in Lebanon.

On Sunday, Danon expressed concerns about Iran’s influence in Lebanon via Hezbollah, labeling it a “warning sign” for broader diplomatic efforts in the Middle East. He emphasized that Israel cannot simply sit back and be a “sitting duck” against assaults from this Iranian-supported group.

“This indicates that Iran remains actively interested in the region and aims to exert control over Lebanon, which poses a direct threat to Israel,” Danon mentioned during an interview.

He further noted that Iran’s ongoing involvement raises serious doubts about the intentions of its government, particularly amidst diplomatic negotiations that attempt to lessen tensions in the area. According to Danon, the Iranian regime seems intent on retaining its influence through proxy forces, despite talks aimed at peace.

Danon also asserted that discussions are taking place with the Lebanese government. However, he made it clear that if Hezbollah attacks, the need for retaliation would be imperative. “We won’t just sit idly by while Hezbollah targets our citizens. Our self-defense is non-negotiable,” he stated.

He expressed hope that Lebanon would assert itself against Iranian-backed groups and accused Iran of trying to hinder Israeli-Lebanese negotiations.

Meanwhile, U.S. diplomats, led by Vice President J.D. Vance, are anticipated to engage in peace discussions with Iranian officials in Switzerland, with an aim to progress on the Lebanese ceasefire situation. Vance shared his hopes for meaningful advancements during recent conversations.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog echoed sentiments about seeking a diplomatic resolution that includes the disarmament of Hezbollah, calling this aspect central to the strategic and tactical dialogues ongoing regarding Lebanon.

Danon expressed gratitude to U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, for facilitating the ongoing talks between Israel and Lebanon, reiterating Israel’s goal of liberating the Lebanese government and military from Iranian influence.
