Israel Activates New Defense System, Intercepts Iranian Drones
Israel announced the activation of a new aerial defense system named “Barakmen,” or “Lightning Shield,” on Sunday night. This system successfully intercepted and destroyed several Iranian drones, marking a significant step in their defense strategy.
The Israeli Navy utilized the “Barak Mazen” system from the SA’AR 6 missile ship, successfully intercepting eight Iranian drones with its long-range air defense (LRAD) interceptors. John Hannah, a senior national security fellow, remarked that this system would greatly enhance Israel’s defenses against aerial threats, particularly after previous Iranian missile attacks in 2024.
Hannah emphasized that “Barak Mazen” adds another layer to Israel’s sophisticated missile defense capabilities, which are already among the most advanced globally.
The Israeli Navy’s defense system is designed to intercept a variety of threats, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and cruise missiles. Hannah pointed out that it also protects not only the navy fleet but extends to critical oil and gas infrastructure in Israel’s Eastern Mediterranean region, as well as key population centers along the coast.
“This allows for intercepts to happen well away from Israel’s borders, providing essential strategic depth for the nation,” he noted.
Since the escalation of tensions with Iran, Israeli forces have reported intercepting about 25 UAVs that posed threats to the nation.
Escalating Conflict Between Israel and Iran
The situation intensified further, as Israel and Iran exchanged missile strikes for the fourth consecutive day. Iran launched a new wave of attacks that resulted in casualties, with at least eight fatalities reported.
In a related development, Israeli forces asserted their air superiority over Tehran. They urged around 330,000 residents in central Tehran to evacuate in anticipation of a forthcoming Israeli strike.
