On Monday, Israeli officials revealed their plans for a new military operation in Gaza, seeking to “conquer” the territory and create a “sustainable existence” there.
“The operation is named Operation Gideon,” reports a correspondent from the Guardian. “Its goal is to secure a permanent Israeli presence in the region, suggesting there will not be a post-war scenario.”
Prior to Monday, there hadn’t been any official announcements regarding Israel’s intentions to fully occupy the Gaza Strip. However, it’s becoming evident that Gaza is being increasingly viewed as a military buffer zone.
This prospect has caused significant concern among Palestinians, who have dreaded such a development since the onset of the conflict.
There’s an essential Palestinian principle, known as sumud, that embodies their connection to the land. It reflects a steadfast refusal to leave one’s home, whether in the West Bank or Gaza, emphasizing the importance of resisting displacement.
