Issa requests investigation into LAPD's slow reaction to ICE officers

California GOP Rep. Darrell Issa Calls for Investigation of LAPD’s Response to ICE Protests

California Representative Darrell Issa is pushing for an inquiry into claims that the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) did not act swiftly enough to safeguard ICE officials who were assaulted amid violent protests in the city last Friday night.

As a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee representing California’s 48th Congressional District, Issa announced on Tuesday that he is advocating for a “thorough Congressional investigation” regarding the response times for ICE officers, referencing a statement from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

DHS reported that over 1,000 individuals surrounded federal law enforcement buildings, attacked ICE personnel, slashed tires, and caused significant property damage. Eyewitnesses noted a two-hour delay in the LAPD’s response.

LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell stated during a press conference that he could hardly believe the claims of delayed response, and emphasized that the actual response time was approximately 40 minutes due to traffic conditions.

In a statement addressing the situation, DHS Deputy Director Tricia McLaughlin reiterated the urgency of the issue. “It’s critical to understand why it took so long for the LAPD to respond while chaos unfolded,” she said. “In those two hours, serious incidents occurred, including attacks on federal officers.”

Some anti-ICE protests turned violent, with projectiles and fireworks being launched at law enforcement. By Monday, LAPD reported that 50 individuals had been arrested on various charges, including attempted murder. Several officers also sustained injuries, although they were minor.

The LAPD has come under scrutiny, not just from Issa and other GOP members, but also from individuals questioning whether external pressures were applied to limit their response to the protests. It has raised concerns about safety and the LAPD’s commitment to uphold law and order amid increasingly tumultuous protests.

While some demonstrators acted peacefully, the situation escalated quickly, leading to significant unrest and injuries. The debate around the LAPD’s response continues, reflecting broader tensions within California politics.
