Representative Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) has made the decision not to enter the Texas race, opting instead to stay in California and run in the newly redrawn 48th Congressional District. Sources familiar with the situation mentioned that Issa received encouragement from friends and colleagues in Congress to consider a run in Texas following California’s passing of Proposition 50. However, Republican leaders are focusing their efforts on California and anticipate strong backing from President Donald Trump.

Issa expressed his commitment to running in California despite the recent changes that favor Democrats in the district. “I’m eager to clarify my position. Here’s the reality: members of the Texas House and many Texans have reached out to me about running there after Gavin Newsom’s controversial redistricting. I appreciate the chance, but I consider California my home and intend to continue serving here,” he stated.

As it stands, Issa currently represents California’s 48th Congressional District, which will see its lines altered in upcoming elections due to Proposition 50’s approval. Interestingly, during a radio interview, he did hint at a potential interest in Texas’ 32nd Congressional District.

In the interview, he noted the importance of being where he can be most beneficial. Meanwhile, the Texas Legislature had approved a redistricting plan, but a federal court has since blocked its use for the 2026 elections. This adds a layer of complexity to the ongoing redistricting battles, with the Republicans aiming to retain their hold in Congress amid shifting dynamics.

While the challenge lies ahead—with Republicans currently holding a majority but facing the difficulty of maintaining that without Trump on the ballot as he was during the last election—Issa seems resolute in his choice to stick with California. “I trust the people of San Diego and Riverside counties. They’ve elected me multiple times, and I believe they will see my commitment. I’m not leaving California,” he concluded.
