House Republicans are taking the first step in pursuing Hunter Biden for contempt of Congress.
Last month, Hunter Biden defied a congressional subpoena to appear for a deposition before lawmakers testify about corruption allegations against the Biden family. Instead, his eldest son met with reporters outside Parliament House and raised further eyebrows with a statement defending himself. At the time, Republican lawmakers vowed to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress for refusing to appear in court.
The House Oversight and Judiciary Committees will take the first steps in the contempt process next week.
Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R) announced on Friday His committee is scheduled to meet on January 10 to draft a contempt resolution against Hunter Biden.
“Hunter Biden's willful refusal to comply with our subpoena constitutes a contempt of Congress,” Comer and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R) said in a statement. It's only natural that we should send it to the bureau.”
“No one will be treated differently because of their last name,” they promised.
If the committee finds Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress, the matter will be referred to the full chamber for a vote. If the House approves the contempt resolution, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R) will refer Hunter Biden to the U.S. Attorney's Office for prosecution. Therefore, the Department of Justice has the final say on whether to file criminal charges.
In a statement, Hunter Biden's lawyer Abby Rowell accused Republicans of playing politics.
lowell Said:
It is clear that the Republican chairman is not interested in knowing the facts or he would allow Mr. Hunter to testify publicly. Instead, House Republicans are continuing to play politics by seeking an unprecedented contempt motion against a man who offered to answer all the pertinent questions from the first request. what are they afraid of?
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, said: issued a statement making similar claims.
“There is no precedent for the U.S. House of Representatives to hold a private citizen in contempt of Congress for offering to testify publicly under oath on a day chosen by a committee,” Raskin laments. “Instead of accepting yes for an answer, Chairman Comer obstructed his own ill-fated investigation by denying Hunter Biden the opportunity to answer all of the committee's questions in front of the American people and the world. .”
But all that saying is barking, no biting.
The truth is that Hunter Biden tried to dictate the terms of the deposition, claiming he would only testify before the hearing.
However, none of the witnesses involved in the investigation have been publicly deposed. Granting his eldest son the privileges he requested would essentially have given him special treatment in Republican eyes. Congress has rarely, if ever, allowed investigative witnesses to determine the terms of their subpoenas.
Whether the Justice Department will prosecute Hunter Biden is another matter.
Indeed, the Department of Justice prosecuted steve bannon and peter navarro, two Donald Trump allies who rebelled against the committee on January 6th. On the other hand, the prosecution denied the request Mark Meadows and Dan Scavino for not cooperating with Congress.
The possible contempt of Congress charge comes as Hunter Biden faces two separate criminal charges, one for alleged firearms crimes and one for alleged tax crimes.he will be charged in court About next week's taxes.
