Apple Invests $500 Million in U.S. Rare Earth Mine

Apple announced a significant $500 million investment in the only operating rare earth mine in the United States this week. This move aligns with efforts to diminish reliance on China, which currently dominates about 90% of the global production of rare earth magnets, supporting President Trump’s initiatives in the sector.

Duncan McIntyre, CEO of Highland Electric Fleet, emphasized on Breitbart News Daily that maintaining a steady supply chain is crucial, as rare earths are fundamental to many modern technologies. These minerals are essential for devices like smartphones and computers, as well as electric vehicles and defense systems.

McIntyre pointed out, “The United States shouldn’t rely on Asia every year. What we want is a fully independent national supply chain.” It’s clear that the push for independence is growing stronger, especially with the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence and the energy demands that come with it.

He noted, “We need to double our energy supply. That means we need more natural gas, a larger nuclear industry, and increased solar energy. The reality is that data centers consume vast amounts of electricity. Batteries play a role in ensuring these facilities operate effectively during peak usage times, so to address this demand, we need additional power plants and effective storage solutions.”

Highland Electric Fleets aims to enhance efficiency in cities across America. Their mission includes electrifying various municipal vehicles, including garbage trucks and school buses. McIntyre stated, “The biggest driver is the impact of diesel exhaust, particularly on young children. The health benefits of reducing that exposure are notable, with direct links to conditions like pediatric asthma. These efforts also improve local health.” He added that, during emergencies such as floods or tornadoes, their battery fleet can be utilized to support schools and community centers.

McIntyre also discussed the growing quality of batteries as demand rises across the U.S. “This technology isn’t new, but there has been a considerable increase in profitability over the past few years. I think it’s primarily driven by the exponential demand for technology, which has allowed manufacturers to scale effectively.”

Some companies are planning to ramp up production of gas-powered vehicles. However, McIntyre believes this won’t slow down the shift toward battery power. He mentioned, “We feel that transition is inevitable.” He noted that consumers must weigh their options based on cost, reliability, practicality, and health benefits, as these factors are key in influencing community decisions.
