Giorgio Armani Passes Away at 91

Renowned Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani has died at the age of 91.

A statement from the Armani Group revealed Thursday that he “passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones.”

“With endless sadness, the Armani Group announces the death of Giorgio Armani, the creator, founder, and relentless driving force,” the statement noted.

Reports suggest that while Armani had been facing health challenges for some time, this was the first time in his illustrious career that he missed an event during Milan Men’s Fashion Week back in June.

His last collection was launched on May 21st.

The statement referred to Armani as “Re Giorgio—King Giorgio,” highlighting that he founded his namesake company in 1975. He became synonymous with sophisticated and understated style, influencing not just fashion but various aspects of life.

In 1980, he designed the iconic suit worn by Richard Gere in “American Gigolo,” which marked a significant moment in his career. This move established him as a key player in a global empire that extended from haute couture to everyday urban fashion, including eyewear, footwear, and home goods.

Notably, actress Diane Keaton wore Armani to the 1978 Academy Awards, where she won Best Actress for her role in “Annie Hall.” Keaton opted for a skirt and blazer combination that defied the conventional gown norms.

Reflecting on that era, Armani mentioned, “It’s interesting to look back on this as in 1978 we were all adjusting how we thought of ourselves socially and professionally. Women in particular were discovering new voices.”

He pointed out that women’s power suits became cultural icons during the 70s and 80s, associating his brand with this transformative style that empowered women.

Armani’s brand expanded beyond clothing to include cosmetics, fragrances, furniture, and accessories. Forbes estimates his net worth at about $12.1 billion, placing him 235th among the world’s billionaires.

In accordance with Armani’s wishes, his funeral will be private, but his Milan headquarters will open to the public for a wake on weekends.
