NYC Embraces the Nonna Trend
Italian grandmothers are hitting the fashion scene hard as summer gives way to autumn. The latest craze? Think colorful headscarves—it’s all about that vintage-inspired, “Nonnacore” look that has taken over runways and social media alike.
This trend, which is being flaunted by everyone from Rihanna to subway styles, is a nod to glamorous Italian grandmas. New Yorker Ariana Lombardo, a hairstylist and self-proclaimed fashion maximalist, shared her inspiration comes from not just celebrities like Rihanna and Aaliyah but her own grandmother as well. “It’s simple, chic, and looks put together,” she remarked, noting the popularity of her TikTok tutorial on the nonnacore style.
Many everyday fashionistas are quickly picking up on this trend, especially after seeing influencers like Beyoncé and Hailey Bieber sport headscarves during their summer adventures.
“With the whole economic situation, people are getting creative with their wardrobes,” stylists point out. Scarves aren’t just luxurious; they’re practical too. Fabrics can be transformed from headpieces to belts or even tied into cute crop tops. Plus, they provide a fun, budget-friendly way to enhance any outfit.
Emphasizing the beauty of thrifting, stylist Dawn Del Russo believes that reusing fabric—just like grandmas of yesteryear—can keep your look stylish while being economical. After all, Italian grandmothers often repurposed fabric from their own homes into fashionable accessories.
Emily Bergeron, a vintage clothing curator, echoed this sentiment, saying that the nonnacore trend feels like a little European getaway. “Almost everyone has a silk scarf lying around. It’s accessible and instantly elevates your look,” she noted.
However, celebrities aren’t solely focused on the practical aspects; they’re pushing the trends too. From Rihanna’s stunning Valentino scarf to A-list stars like Anya Taylor Joy and Kim Kardashian flaunting their own styles, the influence is evident. Despite their glamorous status, Brooklynite Arian Antonio highlighted that anyone can pull off this look. She mentioned how a simple scarf can uplift not just their outfit, but their mood as well, especially in challenging times.
“People need a splash of color in their lives,” she said, referencing the abundance of scarves seen at events like Lollapalooza. “They’re versatile and add a quirky twist to any outfit.”
Lombardo fully agrees, stating, “They add a funky edge to everyone.” Whether you’re a celebrity or just someone enjoying the streets of New York City, a well-placed scarf can really enhance your presence.
How to Achieve the Nonna Look
- Start with a large square scarf, unfolded at two corners.
- Fold it diagonally to form a triangle.
- Position the triangle on your head with the flat edge on your forehead and the point facing back.
- Wrap the sides around the back of your head and tie them securely in place.
- For additional hold, use small double-sided tape on your forehead.
- Let the scarf tail hang freely for that extra flair.
