Italy high jumper Gianmarco Tamberi apologizes to wife after losing wedding ring during flag-bearing duties

Something went a little wrong for Italian high jumper Gianmarco Tamberi’s flag-bearing duties at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics, but it had nothing to do with the green, white and red flag he was waving.

He lost his wedding ring.

Tamberi apologised in an open letter to his wife of two years, Chiara Bontempi.

“I’m sorry, my love. I’m so sorry,” he wrote in Italian on Instagram, which was translated into English. “Too much water, too much weight lost in recent months and maybe an uncontrollable passion for what we were doing. Probably all three.”

He said he saw the ring slip off his finger.

“I followed it until I saw it bounce into the boat,” Tamberi explained, “but unfortunately it bounced in the wrong direction.”

Tamberi shared flag-bearer duties with fencer Ariana Errigo during Friday’s opening ceremony.

Tamberi has always been the type to make the most of these great moments, especially on the track, so it’s no surprise that he’s ecstatic when he sees the flag waving.

One of the world’s best high jumpers, Tamberi came up with the flamboyant idea of ​​pretending to have springs hidden in her spikes when she won gold at the European Championships before Paris, and was also seen jumping into the arms of Italian President Sergio Mattarella after winning.

And at the Tokyo Olympics, Tamberi shared the gold medal with Qatari track and field star Mutaz Barshim and celebrated with friends.

In her Instagram post, Tamberi hinted at bringing home an even bigger gold medal, suggesting she would bring home gold in the high jump if her event were to be held.

But he finds some solace in the fact that he lost his wedding ring in the Seine during the Olympics.
