Body of Last American Hostage Returned from Gaza
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Monday that the body of Staff Sergeant Itai Chen, a 19-year-old dual U.S.-Israeli citizen, has been returned from Gaza for burial. Unfortunately, seven more hostages remain unaccounted for in Gaza.
After the identification process was completed by the National Institute of Forensic Medicine, the IDF, together with the Israeli Police and the Military Rabbinate, informed Chen’s family of the return for burial.
Itai was part of the 77th Battalion of the 7th Armored Brigade and lost his life on October 7, 2023, during intense combat near Kibbutz Nahal Oz, which was heavily affected by Hamas’ attacks. His tank was struck, leading to his body being taken into Gaza. The official confirmation of his death came later, on March 10, 2024.
Profile of Itai Chen
Itai was the middle child in a family of three. He grew up in Netanya, Israel, where he was involved in an advanced academic program and was remembered for his kindness and humor. Basketball, hiking, and rock climbing were his passions, and he even worked as a camp counselor. Despite injuring himself during camp, he insisted on staying through the summer to inspire the children he guided. This sense of responsibility eventually propelled him to enlist as an armored soldier. He is survived by his parents, Ruby and Haggitt, along with his brothers, Roy and Aron.
His parents have tirelessly campaigned for his release over the past year, meeting with high-ranking officials in both Israel and the U.S., including President Trump, to advocate for the return of all hostages and remains from the conflict.
The Prime Minister’s office expressed condolences, stating, “The Israeli government shares the deep sorrow of the Chen family and all families of deceased hostages. We will not compromise and will spare no effort until all hostages are home. May his memory be blessed.”
In response to Itai’s return, the Hostage and Missing Families Forum remarked that it brings some relief to those who have endured fear and hardship for over two years. They emphasized their commitment to ensuring the return of the last hostage.
Itai’s funeral is scheduled for later this week, where he will be honored with full military honors.
