On CNN’s “The Source” broadcast Wednesday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) responded to a question about what Israel should do in light of Hamas fighters in Rafah and Hamas hostages, saying, “It’s difficult. It’s a problem.” We have to go after Hamas, but we can’t continue doing something that literally almost wipes out the entire population of the region. ”
Sanders praised President Joe Biden for threatening to take away some weapons from Israel if it entered the populated area of Rafah, but said that if Israel launched an “incredibly destructive war” After saying he wouldn’t give Israel a dime if he continued, host Caitlan Collins asked:[S]Others who see this differently than you might look at this and say, yes, President Biden also says that Israel should do what it takes to defeat Hamas. And the Israel Defense Forces say there is a Hamas battalion in Rafah, key Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar is there, and there are hostages. So, I think some people will hear this and say, “What should Israel do?” ”
Sanders said, “Look, it’s a tough question. Hamas is a very difficult enemy to fight. They’re a terrorist group and they’re using civilian shields, that’s true. But look, America What Hamas cannot and must not participate in is literally destroy all of Gaza, the infrastructure, the education, the health system, and so many women and children were killed. We have to go after them, but we can’t continue doing something that literally almost wipes out the entire population of the area.”
