ICE Dismantling Advocated by Rep. Raul Ruiz
Rep. Raul Ruiz (D-Calif.) expressed on CNN’s “The Story Is” that there is a pressing need to dismantle ICE to ensure the protection of people’s rights and their dignity. He articulated this viewpoint during a discussion on the issues of defunding the Department of Homeland Security and suggested the possibility of impeaching Governor Kristi Noem.
When host Erex Michaelson presented viewpoints regarding ICE’s operations, Ruiz asserted that the brutality and violence currently witnessed in society demand accountability. He emphasized the failures in leadership related to the murder cases of Renee Goode and Alex Preti, suggesting that Governor Noem’s actions warrant impeachment. Ruiz pointed out that the solution to this brutality lies in reallocating funds, advocating for a dismantling of ICE as a means to uphold human rights and dignity.
Michaelson raised a counterpoint, asking if there aren’t indeed problematic individuals within ICE and whether the agency’s efforts have also removed dangerous criminals from the country, which might justify its existence. He questioned if defunding ICE could lead to less safety.
Ruiz responded by acknowledging the importance of holding violent criminals accountable. He agreed that immigrants who commit serious crimes should face removal. However, he critiqued the reality of indiscriminate arrests and deportations targeting non-criminal immigrants under the Trump administration, highlighting the current violence against civilians and protestors. Ruiz conveyed that prioritizing resources on non-criminal immigrants diverts attention from serious offenders like drug traffickers and violent criminals.
He concluded by noting that the current tactics used by masked officers and unmarked vehicles create unnecessary fear and anxiety among community members, particularly targeting individuals based on their appearance.
