It’s why ‘he’s been so successful’

California Governor Gavin Newsom has sought to reverse concerns about President Biden’s age, arguing that his octogenarian status is actually an asset.

“I’ve seen him up close and I’ve seen him from afar, but what I’m saying here is that he was… I think it’s because of my age that I was so successful.”

At 81, Biden is the oldest president in U.S. history and will be 86 at the end of his hypothetical second term. A series of polls shows voters have deep misgivings about the president’s age.

If former President Donald Trump, 77, wins in November and serves out his entire term, he will become the oldest president in U.S. history by several months, surpassing Biden.

Newsom, 56, has fueled presidential speculation himself and has emerged as one of Biden’s most powerful surrogates.

The Golden State governor has repeatedly denied running for president in 2024, emphasizing his loyalty to Biden.

In response to questions, Newsom said, “It’s not even an interesting conversation,” and ruled out running for office “100 percent.” “By the way, frankly, I think this is the kind of terrible conversation they want us to have.”

President Biden said the age question was “legitimate” but insisted he was fulfilling his mission. AP

He dismissed questions about whether he had been asked to run for office, calling them “useless chatter.”

Mr. Newsom also praised Mr. Biden for accomplishing “something we never could have dreamed of.”

Some Democrats have publicly and quietly expressed unease about Mr. Biden’s prospects in an expected rematch with Mr. Trump.

Newsom is bullish about Biden’s chances and doesn’t think Democrats are underestimating the Republican front-runner.

“No. Well, I think [Trump is] Weakness disguised as strength. I think he’s more upset,” Newsom said. “He’s less interesting than he was a few years ago.”

“Democrats are stronger and we’re winning. 2018, 2020, 22, 23,” Newsom asserted, referring to Democratic wins in polls at the time. “We continue to outperform, and Donald Trump is a big part of that.”

Newsom also argued that Biden should debate Trump ahead of the general election.

“Biden defeated Trump in previous debates. Looking forward to it. [it]” Newsom said, adding that Biden should “100%” confront his predecessor.

There have long been questions about whether Donald Trump and Joe Biden will debate in November. Reuters

Trump has repeatedly encouraged a verbal confrontation with Biden, telling Fox News at Town Hall last week, “I’m going to do that right now on your show.”

“This is just pure projection on a man who refused to debate in his own primary. Back to the point, it’s weakness disguised as strength,” Newsom said of President Trump’s provocation.

The Commission on Presidential Debates has already scheduled three matches for 2024, but the Republican National Committee is at odds with the group, raising questions about whether they will actually happen.

Newsom urged U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., to vote unconditionally for the Michigan Democrat rather than vote for Biden in the Feb. 27 primary to protest its handling of the war in Israel. (Democrat, Michigan) answered questions carefully.

“I have a lot of respect for it. People have different opinions,” Newsom said. “I am deeply concerned about the humanitarian crisis and that is how she expressed it.”

“As it relates to Biden and as it relates to this primary, it’s not a close bet or a decision.”

He also said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was “doubling down on fools” by “withdrawing” from the possibility of a two-state solution.
