Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, who was selected Monday as former President Donald Trump’s running mate, stressed the importance of U.S. support for Israel within the framework of his America First foreign policy, highlighting its moral, religious and strategic rationale while also criticizing decades of U.S. foreign policy.
Speaking at the Quincy Institute in May, Vance said: Explained He offered a scathing critique of decades of US foreign policy, describing it as “America First on steroids”, noting that “problem after problem pops up, but somehow the foreign policy consensus in this city seems to almost always be wrong.”

Speaking at a US think tank specialising in US foreign policy, Vance said he represented “Midwesterners” and called for a foreign policy that recognised that “the moral intuition of the American people” was paramount.
As a result, he stressed the need to reevaluate America’s international engagement and prioritize alliances that align with the country’s interests and values, while also emphasizing his strong support for Israel.
The Ohio senator noted the deep cultural and religious ties between the Jewish state and the United States, saying, “Americans care a lot about Israel because America remains the largest Christian-majority country in the world.”
He also argued that American support for Israel is not only a moral imperative but also a strategic advantage, particularly in terms of technological and defense cooperation, and praised the Jewish state’s technological advances, particularly in missile defense systems such as Iron Beam.
“Israel is carrying out the most important work to actually achieve missile defense parity,” he noted, emphasizing the strategic benefits of the partnership between the two countries.
Vance voiced his support for Israel’s fight against Hamas, arguing that peace and stability in the Middle East requires Israel to defeat the Gaza-based terrorist organization as a functioning military institution.
The Republican vice presidential candidate contrasted his stance on Israel with his views on the Ukrainian conflict, questioning the strategic end of US support for Ukraine. While he acknowledged the bravery of the Ukrainian people, he argued that long-term US involvement was not in America’s interest.
“We must identify where our interests matter most and focus there,” he said, arguing for a more selective approach to foreign aid and military support.
Vance also criticized Washington for not making necessary compromises, pointing out the strain on resources being placed on supporting multiple conflicts at once, and warned that China’s rise as an industrial power puts the American middle class at risk, stressing the need to rebuild domestic manufacturing.
Finally, he recalled conversations with Israeli officials who suggested that U.S. demands to support Ukraine were depleting Israel’s military stockpiles, which in turn was prolonging the Gaza conflict “in a way that was really destructive to U.S. interests.”
Vance’s comments appear to reflect a growing sentiment among younger Republicans who are prioritizing American interests and the middle class while reevaluating traditional alliances and military commitments.
Monday, Trump Announced He named Vance his running mate for vice president in 2024. The highly anticipated moment came just as the former president was formally nominated as the Republican presidential candidate at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
After lengthy deliberation and consideration, and taking into account many other great talents, I have determined that the man best qualified to serve as Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio. J.D. has served us well…

Vance, who will represent Ohio starting in 2022 and is currently the youngest senator, has been a vocal critic of America’s traditional foreign policy approach and has maintained strong conservative support for Israel for many years.
“Our goal in the Middle East is to ensure that Israel has good relations with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf Arab countries,” he said. Said CNN “We can’t do that unless Israel finishes its business with Hamas. If they can’t even do that, the Middle East will take the stance that they can’t be trusted.”
“You can never defeat Hamas’ ideology, but you can eliminate its commanders, its last military-trained battalions, and I think Israel should be given the authority to do that,” he suggested.
2022, Vance Said Jerusalem Post He would be “more of a supporter of the U.S.-Israeli relationship than anyone else.”
