This Sunday, a backup showdown is set to take place in Minneapolis.
JJ McCarthy, the quarterback for the Vikings, is dealing with high ankle sprains and is expected to be out for about two to four weeks, according to ESPN. Coach Kevin O’Connell mentioned that it’s likely McCarthy won’t be playing this week.
As a result, Carson Wentz will step in as the starter for Minnesota.
The Vikings are preparing to host the Bengals this Sunday. Unfortunately for Cincinnati, their star QB Joe Burrow will be sidelined for three months after undergoing surgery on a toe injury. Jake Browning is expected to take charge of the offense.
O’Connell provided further bad news on Monday regarding the team’s lineup, as hamstring injuries could also keep Aaron Jones out on Sunday.
“We’re certainly facing some challenges right now,” O’Connell noted.
After a thrilling comeback against the Bears in his first start, McCarthy faced significant struggles during a home loss to the Falcons, throwing for 158 yards with two interceptions, three fumbles, and being sacked six times.
The coach emphasized that McCarthy’s upcoming absence is strictly a medical issue and not related to his performance.
“No, it’s not connected at all,” O’Connell stated, expressing disappointment upon hearing the news earlier. “For JJ, it’s a long road ahead. Our focus now is on creating a more consistent offensive strategy so that we can minimize crucial mistakes, which are often out of his control.”
McCarthy, drafted 10th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, missed his entire rookie season due to a torn meniscus that required surgery.
