JJ McCarthy’s Future in Minnesota Uncertain

It seems JJ McCarthy’s position with the Vikings might not be as secure as he would hope.

After a somewhat difficult first year as the starting quarterback for Minnesota, there are indications the team could be seeking new options in 2026.

According to a report from Deanna Russini at The Athletic, while the Vikings plan to keep McCarthy on the roster next season, they are not ready to confirm him as their starting QB.

Russini mentioned, “The team was hoping to see clear signs that he’s the long-term solution, but injuries thwarted those expectations.” She also noted that Minnesota is likely to consider established players via trades and free agency to enhance their quarterback situation.

Recently, NFL.com indicated that the Vikings are open to signing a veteran player who could compete with McCarthy for the starting job in the upcoming season.

Previously, there were rumors surrounding interest in players like Mac Jones, a backup for the 49ers, and Colts starter Daniel Jones, both of whom faced significant injuries late in the season.

McCarthy, who is just 22, has struggled to find his rhythm since being drafted 10th overall in 2024. He began the season recovering from knee surgery to address a torn meniscus, which kept him sidelined for his entire rookie year.

This season, McCarthy only managed to play in nine games, dealing with an ankle sprain followed by a concussion. Unfortunately, his performance did not meet the Vikings’ expectations.

He threw for 1,450 yards, completing a mere 57.3 percent of his attempts, with more interceptions (12) than touchdown passes (11).

As a starter, the Vikings hold a record of 5-4 with McCarthy, who has crossed the 200-yard mark in passing during only two games.

Despite mixed performances at the quarterback position, the team sits at 8-8 and still has a chance to finish above .500 in Week 18.

McCarthy is set to take the field this Sunday when the Vikings face the Packers in their last regular-season matchup.
