Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant has responded to Stephen A. Smith, who suggested that NBA players are hesitant to join the team due to safety concerns in Memphis. On the recent episode of “First Take,” Smith, along with Marcus and Marchev Morris, debated whether the Grizzlies should consider a complete overhaul after trading Desmond Bain to the Orlando Magic.
When asked about the lack of interest from players to play in Memphis, Smith attributed it to a general perception of safety, citing players like Jimmy Butler. He emphasized that local officials have acknowledged the issue and the need for improvement in the city.
Morant didn’t directly address Smith’s remarks but shared his perspective online. He humorously commented about focusing more on the Grizzlies than the Finals, critiquing the negative narratives around cities and teams on a national level.
The “First Take” panel also touched on Morant’s future with the Grizzlies, especially regarding the competitiveness of the Western Conference. Morant hinted he intends to stay in Memphis with a post that referenced his commitment to the area.
In addition to discussing Morant, Smith mentioned the player’s past gun incident, describing him as a “good brother” but acknowledging his past mistakes. Smith expressed concerns about Morant’s injuries this season, noting he has faced multiple ailments that affected his availability to play.
The Grizzlies secured the eighth spot in the Western Conference this season with a 48-34 record, but fell short in the playoffs against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Morant wrapped up his sixth season in Memphis, averaging 23.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 7.3 assists over 50 games.
