Jack Hughes reaches out to USA's WBC team ahead of the Canada match

Team USA’s Preparation for Quarterfinals

In the latest USA-Canada face-off, Jack Hughes secured a win. Hughes, a star player for the Devils and a notable figure in American hockey, connected with the baseball team as they gear up for their pivotal quarterfinal match on Friday in the World Baseball Classic.

“Jack sent a supportive message in their group chat that really boosted morale, and we shared it with our team,” manager Mark DeRosa mentioned during a Thursday press conference. He also reflected on the recent games where he saw the hockey team triumph over Canada in overtime.

DeRosa further shared that there are plans for players to wear hockey jerseys during batting practice and while hanging out in the clubhouse. “We’re definitely focused on winning gold,” he emphasized.

Hughes managed to score the deciding goal against Canada, even while nursing a few broken teeth. The Americans were close to missing the finals, so every ounce of good luck from the talented 24-year-old should certainly help.

As Team USA faced Italy, DeRosa had the impression that his squad had already secured a quarterfinal spot. “I respect Italy a lot. Oddly enough, despite already having a ticket to the quarter-finals, we still want to win this game. It’s more about preparing for the next phase,” he noted during an MLB Network segment. It sounded like an important match considering their upcoming schedule.

DeRosa made several strategic changes, like starting Paul Goldschmidt at first base instead of Bryce Harper, and bringing Ernie Clement in at second base. He even opted to use Ryan Yarbrough for a few innings, although the team ultimately fell short with an 8-6 loss to Italy.

Now, the team’s advancement depended on the outcome of the game between Italy and Mexico, which added a layer of tension.

After the loss to Italy, DeRosa acknowledged he had “misspoken” about their chances. “I was just chatting with some friends and had a total brain freeze on the numbers. I knew Mexico was facing Italy, and that if we lost, the situation would hinge on runs and outs,” he explained.

Luckily for DeRosa and the Americans, Italy’s 9-1 victory over Mexico helped maintain their chances.

Mexico’s win wasn’t necessarily a setback for the U.S., but the tiebreaker rules made the situation complicated. Had Mexico won but scored only four runs or fewer, the United States would have been out.

As the Americans prepared for their match against Canada, they were relieved to learn that Canada had won 3-1 in pool play, securing first place in Pool A after defeating Puerto Rico in the tiebreaker.
