Jackson County prolongs deadline for property tax payments

Jackson County Extends Property Tax Payment Deadline

Jackson County residents who haven’t yet settled their property taxes are now getting some extra time. County Executive Phil Levota announced on Friday that the payment deadline has been pushed back to January 31. This decision comes after complications in the mailing process, which meant that not all bills were sent out until December 15. Normally, these bills would go out in mid-November. Just days before the original deadline, some taxpayers expressed to KMBC 9 that they had yet to receive their bills or had questions about the amounts they owed.

Levota acknowledged the situation, stating, “I knew there were problems to solve when I came into this position, and here we are with yet another problem. It’s unavoidable for me. Even though this issue was already in play before I arrived, it was the county government that set the conditions that led to these delays, not the taxpayers.” He emphasized that, “People should not be penalized for things outside of their control. This extension is about fairness, accountability, and ensuring residents have a reasonable opportunity to pay their taxes without additional burden.”

For those who missed the original deadline of December 31, there’s now time until January to make payments in person or by mail. In-person payments will be accepted up until Friday, January 30, and mail payments must be postmarked by January 31. Fortunately, there won’t be any penalties or interest for those who complete their payments by the end of January. However, it’s important to note that this extension applies specifically to the 2025 property tax bill and not to taxes from previous years.
