Injury Update: Jade Melbourne of Washington Mystics
During a recent game against the Las Vegas Aces, Washington Mystics guard and Olympic medalist Jade Melbourne suffered an injury when her own elbow accidentally struck her mouth, resulting in the loss of several front teeth. This incident occurred in the first quarter of the game.
The moment was quite intense; Melbourne seemed to be in significant pain as her teeth were knocked onto the court due to the impact from Ace guard Chelsea Gray’s elbow. It was a shocking sight.
After the injury, bloodied and visibly shaken, Melbourne was removed from the court. Although she couldn’t continue to play, she joined her teammates on the bench to support them. Chelsea Gray was later assessed for a flagrant foul for her role in the incident.
Following the game, Mystics manager Sidney Johnson announced that Melbourne would require stitches for her injuries. Despite the grim circumstances, she managed to appear upbeat post-match. On social media, her teammate Georgia Amoor shared a photo of Melbourne smiling, albeit with a bloody mouth and a couple of chipped teeth, giving a thumbs-up.
Melbourne, who represented Australia and earned a bronze medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, has averaged 6.5 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists this season. As for whether she will miss more time due to her injuries, that remains unclear.
Interestingly, the Mystics managed to pull off a 94-83 victory against the Aces even in Melbourne’s absence, and without key scorer Brittney Sykes.
This season, there has been a noticeable uptick in physical play within the WNBA, and while several players, like Indiana Fever’s Kate Rinklark, have faced tough situations, Melbourne’s injury stands out as one of the more serious ones so far.
