Jaguars Draft Albert Regis
Albert Regis fulfilled his NFL aspirations on Friday when he was chosen by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the third round of the NFL Draft. It’s kind of interesting—before Regis even knew where he was headed, his young daughter seemed to have an inkling. A video circulating on social media showed little Akali crawling towards a cup with the Jaguars logo. This little moment could be seen as her way of predicting which team her dad would wear the jersey for in his rookie season.
Standing at 6 feet 1 inch and weighing 295 pounds, Regis made his mark as a nose tackle at Texas A&M, primarily tasked with halting opposing running backs. His departure has left a noticeable gap in the Aggies’ defensive lineup, prompting the team to bring in CJ Mims, a transfer from North Carolina, to take his place. Mims has had a more prominent role in the nose tackle position during his time at UNC compared to Regis. He began his college career at East Carolina before moving to North Carolina, where he’s anticipated to contribute significantly to the defense this coming season.
Adding to the Aggies’ roster is former Illinois defensive tackle Angelo McCallom, while returning player DJ Hicks is expected to play a vital role in the defensive rotation. Meanwhile, as Regis joins a Jacksonville defensive line that features the 2022 No. 1 overall pick, Travon Walker, along with veteran tackles Arik Armstead and Davon Hamilton, he’ll certainly have some strong players to learn from.
The Jaguars had a decent season last year, securing the AFC South title, but they faced a tough loss against the Buffalo Bills in a close wild card round game. So, as the team looks to build on that momentum, it will be interesting to see how Regis fits into their plans moving forward.
