Jaguars face criticism for important 4th down choice

Jaguars vs. Bills in AFC Wild Card Round

The Jacksonville Jaguars had an opportunity to take a seven-point lead during the second quarter against the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Wild Card Round. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence received the snap and ran to his left, reaching out to secure a first down. However, the officials initially ruled it in his favor, but the Bills challenged the decision. Upon review, it became clear that Lawrence had not gained enough ground.

As a result, the Jaguars ended the drive with no points, and the Bills capitalized, scoring on their next possession to lead 10-7. In a rather surprising move, former Super Bowl champ TJ Ward criticized the Jaguars’ decision to not take points on fourth down. He expressed his frustration on social media, saying, “I’m tired of coaches playing games on 4th down. Let’s take the points. Points are more than just points.” It’s an interesting perspective, isn’t it? I mean, it feels like common sense to take the points when you can.

Ward further explained that missed attempts on fourth down can swing momentum toward the opposing team. “Football isn’t rocket science,” he noted, as if to say it’s basic strategy. Meanwhile, the Jaguars managed to drive the ball from their one-yard line and attempted a long field goal just before halftime, which unfortunately went slightly askew, missing to the left.

On a positive note, Lawrence completed 9 of 15 passes for 88 yards and threw a touchdown pass to Brian Thomas Jr. He also managed to rush for 29 yards on three carries. It seems like he was doing well, even if the score didn’t reflect it.

Bills quarterback Josh Allen remained steady, entering the locker room with 129 passing yards and 12 rushing yards, even managing to score a rushing touchdown. It’s fascinating to see how different quarterbacks approach the game, each with their own unique style and decisions.
