Jake Sullivan warns ‘additional strikes’ coming against Iranian proxies who attacked US forces

National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan teased that the Biden administration is planning additional retaliatory strikes against Iranian proxy targets.

Last week, the United States launched two separate strikes against Iranian proxy targets in Syria, Iraq and Yemen, after three soldiers were killed in a drone strike in Jordan last month.

“The president has been very clear from the beginning,” Sullivan said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday.
“If U.S. forces are attacked, we will respond, and we have responded several times in the past.”

“We will take additional strikes and additional actions to continue sending a clear message that if our troops are attacked, the United States will respond.”

Sullivan said the military was still assessing the number of casualties from the attacks carried out on Friday and Saturday.

“We are confident that this airstrike had the positive effect of reducing the ability of the militias to attack us,” he said.

Sullivan declined to say how many civilians and military personnel were killed or injured in the two reprisal attacks over the weekend.

“What we know is that the targets we hit were perfectly valid targets from the standpoint of containing the weapons and personnel that were attacking U.S. forces,” he said. .

On Friday, the United States hit more than 85 targets in seven outposts in Iraq and Syria with more than 125 precision-guided munitions, national security officials said.

The airstrikes hit the Islamic Resistance Movement in Iraq, an Iranian-backed umbrella organization, and the deadly drone attack that killed three U.S. soldiers and injured 40 others on Jordan’s Tower 22 military base last month. The United States is being blamed for this.

The attack began just hours after a dignified transfer ceremony honoring the three soldiers at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.

And on Saturday, the US and UK bombed 36 Houthi targets in Yemen.

Military officials said all of the attacks were aimed at reducing the military capabilities of Iranian proxies.

Between the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel and the drone strike in Jordan, there were more than 158 attacks on U.S. and allied assets in the region, according to the Pentagon.

Asked if the administration was preparing to fight back, Sullivan said: “We are prepared to deal with any group or country that comes at us.”

President Biden has faced numbing criticism from some Republicans, including House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana), for waiting nearly a week to carry out retaliatory strikes.

“I find it kind of strange,” Sullivan said, recalling that Biden had previously vowed the U.S. would respond before the Jordanian drone strike.

“Obviously, there’s always going to be armchair quarterbacks, but we’re confident in the progress we’ve made so far.”

Sullivan also did not rule out a direct attack on Iran.

“It would be unwise for me to sit in front of the television and talk about what we are regulating and what we are eliminating.”
