CNN anchor Jake Tapper has acknowledged that there has been some criticism regarding the media’s coverage of former President Joe Biden’s cognitive health during his time in office. While promoting his new book, *Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Concealment, and the Disastrous Choice to Run Again*, Tapper discussed this issue during a morning segment. When asked about the backlash from conservatives over perceived inadequate reporting on Biden’s mental state, he responded by admitting that some of the criticism is, perhaps, valid.
Tapper reflected on his past reporting, suggesting that he did cover aspects of Biden’s health but perhaps not extensively enough. He mentioned his belief that there were “two Bidens”—one who appeared functional and another who was not—during the years surrounding the 2019-2020 period.
“While I understand the significance of moments like Biden stumbling or falling off his bike, those instances indicate a larger issue,” Tapper commented. He pointed out that it might reflect something troubling about the expectations Americans have for their president, especially in terms of readiness for crises.
Earlier this week, Fox News Digital released a report analyzing Biden’s public performance, particularly focusing on his debate skills leading into the 2024 presidential election. Tapper noted one significant press conference where Biden’s reaction to a report about his age drew attention. Interestingly, although he previously raised the topic of Biden’s age, Tapper seemed to hold back from fully addressing cognitive concerns during the heated election campaign.
There were even instances, he admitted, where he sidestepped moments that showed Biden’s struggles, such as the “Where is Jackie?” comment made at an event honoring a deceased congresswoman.
On the topic of Biden’s mental acuity, Tapper had defended the president in the past, even asserting in September 2023 that Biden was mentally “sharp.” It’s somewhat of a contrast, considering he later acknowledged the concerns that surfaced among critics about Biden’s effectiveness at 81 years old.
A CNN spokesperson countered claims that Tapper’s coverage lacked rigor, defending his record as a seasoned journalist who has consistently covered both sides of political conversations. They highlighted that he has frequently questioned Biden’s administration about the president’s health and maintained an open dialogue on these important issues.
