Jalen Brunson undergoes hand surgery before contract decision

Jalen Brunson’s offseason started with surgery.

The Knicks’ starting point guard underwent surgery for a broken left hand and will be re-examined in six to eight weeks, the team announced Wednesday morning.

Bojan Bogdanovic, who has one year remaining on his contract, also underwent surgery on his left wrist and is due to be re-evaluated in six to eight weeks.

The Knicks announced in April that Bogdanovic suffered a season-ending injury to his left foot in a first-round game against the 76ers and would undergo surgery.

Brunson suffered a broken hand in Sunday’s Game 7 loss to the Pacers, denying him a chance to lead the Knicks to a come-from-behind victory.

He was injured in the third quarter when he tried to swipe the ball, but it hit Tyrese Hailverton’s leg. Brunson then missed the entire fourth quarter.

His season ended with a disappointing performance in a 130-109 rout, with 17 points on 6-of-17 shooting.

Brunson scored a career-high 28.7 points per game this season. He averaged 32.4 points in the postseason, scoring 40 points five times.

The surgery came ahead of an important offseason for both Brunson and the team.

Brunson, 27, has established himself as a lead option on a championship-level team, and it’s now up to Leon Rose to decide how to best complement the Villanova product.

The Knicks could look to add another star or try again with the same core hoping for some luck with injuries. The team had great results on the court with OG Anunoby.

Brunson is also eligible for a contract extension, but must decide whether to take that money now or wait for a bigger payday next season.

If you jump this summer, you could make about $157 million over four years (about $39.25 million per year), compared to $258 million over five years (about $51.6 million per season) starting next year. can earn.

As for Bogdanovic, it’s unclear whether he’ll be a Knick next season.

He could return as a capable veteran bench member, or be traded to supplement his salary since his cap hit next year is just over $19,033,000.

Since joining the Knicks in a mid-season trade, he has averaged just 10.4 points per game, a significant drop from his 20.2 with the Pistons, but that can be attributed to a change in role.

Bogdanovic had solid outside shooting during the playoffs, making 6-of-15 threes in his first three games, including his 13-point performance in Game 1.

He suffered a season-ending injury in Game 4 shortly after appearing.
