Eagles Beat Titans in Nail-Biter
The Philadelphia Eagles improved to 2-0 after securing a win against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday afternoon in Nashville. Many fans anticipated this outcome, but few expected the game to unfold the way it did.
In a thrilling finish, Jalen Hurts found Darius Cooper for a 3-yard touchdown with less than 10 seconds on the clock, flipping a 20-17 Tennessee lead into a 24-20 Eagles victory. Just a week prior, the Titans had struggled in a 23-10 defeat to the New York Jets, but they managed to hold their own against last year’s NFC East champions.
The Eagles faced challenges right from the start. Star running back Saquon Barkley suffered a stinger on the first play and spent a significant portion of the first half sidelined. He did return after halftime but, unfortunately, ended the game with just four carries for nine yards and one catch for 11 yards.
Philadelphia’s opening drive looked promising, consuming over seven minutes and advancing deep into Tennessee territory, only to end in disappointment. Hurts attempted to connect with DeVonta Smith for a touchdown, but Amani Hooker intercepted the pass, returning it 92 yards to the Eagles’ 10-yard line. Tennessee capitalized on the turnover, with Cam Ward sneaking in for a 1-yard touchdown and taking a quick 7-0 lead.
The Eagles managed to bounce back, scoring on a 2-yard run from Tank Bigsby and a 22-yard touchdown pass from Hurts to Smith late in the second quarter. However, Tennessee wouldn’t back down easily, as Joey Slye nailed a 37-yard field goal as time expired, making it a tight 14-10 game at halftime.
In the third quarter, Jake Elliott added a 58-yard field goal for Philadelphia. Still, Ward responded with another rushing touchdown, bringing the score to 17-17.
As the fourth quarter wore on, Hurts threw his second interception, but the Eagles’ defense held firm, allowing only a 33-yard field goal from the Titans, giving them a 20-17 lead with under two minutes left in the game.
With no timeouts and time running out, Hurts displayed the skills that led the Eagles to a Super Bowl victory in February 2025. He converted a crucial third-and-6 with a 20-yard completion to Dontayvion Wicks and connected with Smith for additional gains that set them up at the Tennessee 3-yard line with 20 seconds left.
Just two plays later, Hurts threw a touchdown pass to Cooper, marking the first touchdown of Cooper’s NFL career.
In the end, Hurts finished with 26 completions on 37 attempts for 264 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Smith had a standout performance, catching 10 balls for 117 yards and a touchdown—almost half of the Eagles’ passing output. With A.J. Brown now in New England, there seems to be a spotlight on Smith to step up, and he did just that in this game.
Ward had a solid showing as well, completing 13-of-20 passes for 183 yards without any turnovers while adding both of Tennessee’s rushing touchdowns. Despite the Titans outgaining the Eagles, Philadelphia managed to dominate possession, leading to some sloppy play from the Eagles at critical moments.
So, it’s hard to panic when a team has won its first two games. Yet, I can’t help but feel that if I were an Eagles fan, I’d be more than a little anxious right now. They’ve managed to win against the Commanders and Titans by just six combined points. While the Commanders might be tougher than expected, the Titans entered this game looking like one of the weakest squads in the league.
Good teams know how to pull off close victories, and credit is due to Hurts for guiding the team through tight situations. However, a supposed contender in the NFC can’t keep relying on last-minute heroics to come out ahead. The Eagles’ standings may reflect perfection, but their on-field performance has been anything but smooth.
