Jamal Adams carried off with knee injury, Vikings coach says it's 'not looking good'

Former New York Jets first-round draft choice Jamal Adams returned to MetLife Stadium on Sunday, seeking to secure a roster spot with the Minnesota Vikings.

Unfortunately, just two weeks after joining the team, he experienced a rough outing when he had to exit the game due to a knee injury during the first half of the Vikings’ 13-10 victory.

Adams was in coverage against New York Giants wide receiver Calvin Austin III in the red zone. As he sprinted across the field to defend the route, he seemingly fell to the ground with a non-contact injury and struggled to get up.

A cart eventually came to the field to transport Adams back to the Vikings’ locker room.

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell commented on Adams’ injury during the game, stating that it “didn’t look good” when he first saw it.

“Jamal has done an unbelievable job here in such a short period of time,” O’Connell noted. “I can feel his passion every day, and I really felt it when I spent a few minutes with him before he was taken off.”

The coach expressed being “devastated” for Adams, emphasizing that the player had carved out a significant role on the team, bringing in crucial experience and toughness. It’s clear that his absence will be notable.

This gives you a good indication of the injury’s seriousness — O’Connell’s remarks speak volumes about the concern surrounding Adams’ status.

It’s disappointing, especially since Adams was having a strong game up to that point, making key stops against the Giants’ running plays and performing well at linebacker.

Adams had joined the Vikings right before training camp kicked off on July 28, fully aware that he would need to compete for a spot on the roster for the upcoming season.

As he approaches his tenth season in the NFL, this competition is a new reality for him, something he didn’t experience in the earlier parts of his career.

Previously, Adams had been a staple for the Jets after being selected sixth overall from LSU in 2017. Over 14 games, he recorded 6.5 sacks, 75 tackles, forced two fumbles, made one pick-six, and deflected seven passes, earning Pro Bowl selections in 2018 and 2019, along with being named a first-team All-Pro in his second season.

After that, the Jets traded him to the Seattle Seahawks, where he played for four seasons before stints with the Tennessee Titans and Detroit Lions in 2024. Eventually, he joined the Las Vegas Raiders in 2025.

In the previous season, Adams switched from safety to linebacker, and the Vikings had intended to continue that transition for the 30-year-old player prior to this injury. However, Adams views himself as a versatile player, capable of fitting into various roles on defense as needed.

Despite the gravity of non-contact knee injuries usually suggesting a severe outcome, Adams remains hopeful that further tests will yield positive news regarding his recovery.
