James Carville advises progressive Democrats to be quiet or exit the party.

Democratic Party Dynamics in Arizona

Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville has given some pointed advice to Arizona’s new Democratic Party chairman. He suggested either “silencing” divisive voices within the party or possibly starting a new progressive party altogether.

Democrats face a challenge in redefining their identity after recent elections. There’s an ongoing debate about whether to soften their approach or stick with hardline left and right identity politics. Interestingly, Carville highlighted how well Democrats are faring in traditionally red Arizona, where they have a Democratic governor and two Democratic senators. Yet, he cautioned that extreme left politics could jeopardize this notable success.

In a recent article from a major publication, it was noted that tensions are brewing within the party, particularly highlighted by a feud involving the governor. Reports indicated that Arizona’s Democratic Party chairman, Robert Brandscom, has faced criticism for his handling of staffing issues and failing to provide financial documents. This has deepened some divisions among party members, including criticism from Senators Reuben Gallego and Mark Kelly.

Carville applauded the senators, telling Brandscom to “shut up” as a reminder of their elected positions. He pointed out that those who aren’t elected should perhaps hold back their opinions. “Why not focus on supporting those who are trying to win elections?” he asked.

Carville sees this as part of a larger issue, referencing Nevada as an example of a state party that has thrived despite challenges. “It has one of the most successful state parties in U.S. history,” he remarked.

His message is clear: winning elections should be the primary goal. He also urged party members to critically assess whether they truly align with Democratic principles or if they are leaning towards their own agendas.

“It’s vital to respect yourself enough to engage in winning elections. Otherwise, what’s the point of being part of democratic politics?” he concluded.

As of now, Arizona Democrats have not responded to these comments.
