James Carville says Biden skipping Super Bowl interview is a ‘sign’

Legendary political strategist James Carville claimed Saturday that the White House has little confidence in President Biden after the president refused to give an interview during Sunday’s Super Bowl.

Biden recently declined to participate in a Super Bowl interview on Sunday for the second year in a row. This interview is a tradition started by President Obama in 2009.

The interviews are generally seen as a way for the president to connect with a large audience that doesn’t normally tune in to political meetings. Last year’s Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles drew 115 million viewers.

Carville, a longtime Democrat, gave his perspective on the situation in an interview with CNN on Saturday.

“It’s close to that, or the biggest audience on television. You get a chance to do a 20- to 25-minute interview that day,” Carville began.

“So you don’t do that? That’s kind of a sign that the staff or yourself don’t have a lot of confidence in you,” Carville continued. “There is no other way but to read this.”

Biden is not the first president to decline the opportunity to speak to a Super Bowl audience. In 2018, President Trump declined to do a Super Bowl interview on NBC.

The consultant also weighed in on Biden’s advanced age, days after the president held a news conference about his mental capacity.

“And he’s not going to debate or anything,” Carville said. “He’s getting older. I’m about the same age as him, so I know what that is, but things never get better.”

On Thursday, Biden lashed out at reporters at a news conference following the release of special counsel Robert Hur’s report that questioned the president’s mental capacity.

“I mean well, I’m old, I know what I’m doing,” Biden said in response to a question from Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy. “I became president and got this country back on its feet. I don’t need his recommendation.”

“How bad is your memory? And can you continue as president?” Doocy asked.

“My memory is very bad. [that] I’ll let you speak,” Biden shot back.
