The new DC Comics streaming series Lanterns, produced by director James Gunn, is drawing sharp criticism for its focus on themes of “white privilege” and racism, with fans expressing their displeasure.
This HBO series is rooted in the Green Lantern universe, showcasing the Green Lantern Corps—a multi-species law enforcement group working to maintain peace across the universe. The character Hal Jordan was the first human member to join the Corps back in 1959, receiving a power ring that emits green energy for various purposes, including fighting enemies. The Corps has its origins in the earlier Green Lantern narratives introduced in 1940 with Alan Scott as its first wielding character.
However, Lanterns seems to prioritize Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) themes along with a focus on black victimology rather than adhering to the Green Lantern oath about combatting evil. After just three episodes, there is a notable backlash from fans against the leftist political elements embedded within the narrative.
James Gunn is producing the series, which is led by Damon Lindelof, a co-creator of Lost. Lindelof was previously let go from a Star Wars project where he aimed to reimagine “The Force” concept, making it more ambiguous and less heroic.

Indulging in a bit of “revisionism,” Lindelof introduces a jaded version of Hal Jordan (played by Kyle Chandler), who has become a disgraced and alcoholic figure by the first episode’s end. The second episode features a scene where a woman explains the concept of white privilege to Jordan’s apprentice, John Stewart (portrayed by Aaron Pierre).
In one particular scene about “white privilege,” it is suggested that white men enjoy the “luxury” of eccentricity and can do anything they want if they are wealthy.
As the third episode progresses, the critique of white individuals persists, and ahead of this episode, Gunn made a social media appeal for viewers to tune in.
