James McAvoy, along with the producer of his film “California Simin,” experienced an unexpected incident at a Toronto bar on Monday night. Reports say McAvoy was punched by a stranger while he was apparently unaware, his back turned to the individual.
The 46-year-old actor was caught off guard by the sudden strike from a drunken patron. According to an insider, McAvoy was just having a casual gathering when, later on, he learned from the staff that the bar was, perhaps, a little too crowded with unruly patrons.
“James’s back was to the guy, and the man just swung at him,” the source explained.
Despite the surprising attack, McAvoy seemed unfazed. He reportedly tried to defuse the situation rather than escalate it and even stayed at the bar, sharing a laugh about the incident afterwards.
As of now, neither McAvoy’s representatives nor the bar have commented on the situation.
The incident occurred while McAvoy was in Toronto for the International Film Festival. He and his wife, Lisa Liberati, attended the world premiere of “California Simin” just days earlier.
In this film, McAvoy makes his directorial debut, portraying the true story of Silibil N’Brains, a Scottish hip-hop duo who pretended to be American to gain credibility in the music industry. The movie is based on a 2011 autobiography by one of the group’s members, Gavin Bain, titled “Straight Outta Scotland: True Stories of Fakes, Money and Betrayal in the Music Industry.”
McAvoy also has a minor role in the film, which adds a personal touch to his directorial efforts.
McAvoy revealed last year that he had married Liberati in secret. The two began dating after meeting on the set of M. Night Shyamalan’s 2016 thriller “Split,” where she worked as a director’s assistant. They welcomed their son in 2022, and McAvoy has a son, Brendan, from his previous marriage to Anne-Marie Duff.
