Texas Senate Candidate’s Controversial Remarks on Karmelo Anthony Case

A Democratic candidate is making efforts to maintain party momentum in the Texas Senate race. In a recent appearance on “The Breakfast Club,” Talarico discussed the contentious guilty verdict for Karmelo Anthony, a high school student who fatally stabbed Austin Metcalf, a white athlete, in Texas. His comments went viral this week, largely due to a tweet by Rep. Brandon Gill, a Republican from Texas.

“I noticed there were no black jurors on the jury,” Talarico stated, claiming that this fact alone demonstrates the system’s failure for black Texans.

The jury had enough evidence to convict Anthony, resulting in a 35-year prison sentence, and the case has ignited a national debate, particularly around issues of anti-white racism. In the interview, Talarico dove into matters of social justice, saying, “I’ve worked on justice reform in the statehouse, and it’s clear that our system does not serve all Americans equally. Sadly, many black Texans have not received the justice they deserve.”

He continued, “Though I can’t claim expertise on this specific case, the absence of black jurors speaks volumes about the inequities in our system.”

During the clip, Talarico appeared to align himself with a town hall participant who had called the tragedy of Karmelo Anthony’s case just, well, a “tragedy.”

The Breakfast Club is a popular radio program in New York City, especially among the black community. Talarico’s segment aired on August 5.

Previously, Talarico has shown his support for the anti-white discourse surrounding the Anthony case.

According to recent polling, Talarico’s race against Republican Ken Paxton for the Senate is extremely close, with just 5% of voters still undecided. The outcome could significantly influence which party gains control of the U.S. Senate in the upcoming elections.
