Texas Senate Candidate Calls for Firearm Restrictions for Young Adults
James Talarico, the Democratic U.S. Senate nominee from Texas, recently urged lawmakers to impose restrictions on certain firearms for young adults during a speech on the Texas House floor. He characterized the rejection of his proposal as ignoring a divine message.
A video shared on Talarico’s YouTube channel shows him speaking during discussions about various bills in response to a tragic shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, in 2022.
In his address on May 11, 2023, Talarico emphasized that not passing HB 2744, a bill he sponsored to prohibit 18- to 21-year-olds from owning certain guns, means “ignoring God’s messengers.”
Although the Texas Legislature did not approve HB 2744, it did enact the Uvalde Strong Act, aimed at enhancing security measures around schools.
Talarico has previously challenged similar proposals and expressed strong opposition to having police safeguard schools, claiming it contributes to a “culture of violence.”
Throughout his advocacy for progressive policies, Talarico has often referenced his Christian beliefs. His positions include support for a Green New Deal, the abolition of prisons, and providing taxpayer-funded healthcare for undocumented immigrants.
RNC spokesperson Zach Kraft remarked that Talarico has made his intentions clear regarding gun confiscation and financial support for undocumented immigrants and minors seeking medical transitions. Kraft described Talarico as a dangerous figure who threatens the way of life for Texans.
Talarico has consistently supported stricter gun regulations. As a Texas legislator, he voted against constitutional carry on several occasions and opposed making Texas a Second Amendment sanctuary. He suggested that those advocating for broad gun rights may not understand the term “well regulated.” He has also backed bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
In a past video clip, Talarico stated that individuals who do not support gun control bear “blood on your hands.”
During a June episode of the Unity Over Division podcast, he argued that the Second Amendment has its limits, similar to the First Amendment. Talarico affirmed the right to bear arms for self-defense and for recreational purposes while acknowledging the necessity of regulations, comparing it to needing permits for protests.
In a 2020 interview, he supported an assault weapons ban and pointed out that discussions about the Second Amendment often overlook the phrase “well regulated.” He stated that the right to bear arms is not without restrictions and suggested various measures, including universal background checks and limitations on firearm purchases.
Talarico’s campaign priorities include calls for safe storage laws and background checks, which he deems essential for public safety. His website highlights raising the minimum purchase age for semiautomatic rifles and lists extensive gun control measures.
Opposing Talarico is Republican candidate Ken Paxton, who, as Texas attorney general, has actively contested gun control laws. Paxton announced in April his efforts to uphold an injunction blocking a Biden administration rule on private firearm sales and has sued local governments over restrictions on gun ownership.
