Jamie Lee Curtis Critiques Erasure of Diversity Language
Actress Jamie Lee Curtis has voiced concerns that President Donald Trump is attempting to “erase” language surrounding diversity and inclusion.
While reflecting on the evolution of the horror film industry, Curtis celebrated the increased visibility of women and minorities since the release of the original “Halloween” in 1978. “I’m glad that more women are being recognized,” she said at the South by Southwest festival on Saturday.
She continued, “More people of color are being valued; more genders are being valued. The terms diversity and inclusion—words that Donald Trump is trying to erase from our language—are, frankly, abhorrent. This is a great thing.”
Curtis also praised the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for acknowledging diverse films like “Sinners” and emphasized that growth is essential, as outlined in the Constitution. “It wasn’t intended to be a rigid binary idea; it was made to evolve as society evolves. Yet, our thinking seems to have solidified into rigid categories, leading to various conflicts,” she expressed.
In response, White House Press Secretary Davis Engle dismissed Curtis’s remarks, saying, “No one in their right mind cares what some insane, woke celebrity in Hollywood says or thinks.”
Curtis has been critical of the Trump administration in the past. Recently, she condemned the deaths of Alex Preti and Renee Good at the hands of Border Patrol agents and immigration officials. “They were Americans! Shot by the government,” she shared on social media, calling for the “ice storm of the Resistance” to resonate loudly.
She has also accused conservatives of fostering transphobia “in the name of religion,” a stance she has taken in support of her child, who came out as transgender in 2021. “I pray that the homophobia and transphobia that the right champions in the name of religion will be exposed as wrong and silenced by the humanity that is at the heart of our gay and transgender communities,” Curtis concluded.
