Jamie Raskin Continues to Decline Condemnation of Squad Member for Using Antisemitic Phrase

Maryland Democrat Jamie Raskin’s Stance on Rashida Tlaib’s Controversial Statements

During a CNN appearance, Maryland Democrat Jamie Raskin declined to condemn fellow Democrat Rashida Tlaib for her use of Michigan’s slogan in a context that some interpret as advocating for the eradication of Israel.

This follows a resolution by the House of Representatives in November 2023 that rebuked Tlaib for her phrase “from river to sea,” which has been associated with anti-Israel sentiment. Raskin defended his position by claiming he was upholding “free speech” rights during his interview with CNN News Central.

He stated, “We have a vital freedom of speech protected by the First Amendment. It’s crucial to be mindful of the words we choose and their implications.” Raskin also mentioned that the current political climate has escalated tensions, leading to real violence, referencing troubling incidents in Minnesota involving politically charged threats.

He highlighted that Tlaib’s speech emerged amidst broader discussions aimed at condemning her, noting that historically, the House has refrained from denouncing political expressions deemed less contentious than those made by Tlaib.

Raskin faced criticism for not addressing Tlaib’s remarks, particularly in light of two significant anti-Semitic incidents that occurred in Washington, D.C., and Boulder, Colorado. Federal authorities charged Elias Rodriguez with multiple crimes linked to a shooting at the D.C. Jewish Museum, resulting in fatalities. In another incident, Mohamed Sabri Soliman attacked an event supporting hostages amid the ongoing conflict sparked by Hamas’s actions, which resulted in thousands of casualties in Israel.

Since Israel initiated military operations in retaliation for Hamas attacks, Tlaib has consistently called for a ceasefire. She previously described the establishment of Israel as a “catastrophe” during a May 2023 Senate hearing, where she obstructed then-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy from hosting events in the Capitol. In October 2023, Tlaib shared sentiments reflecting Hamas’s claims, which were later contested by a U.S. intelligence report indicating that an Israeli airstrike had caused substantial casualties in a Gaza hospital.

In December 2023, Tlaib was among 13 Democrats who opposed a resolution condemning anti-Semitism. Furthermore, she was the sole representative to abstain from a resolution decrying the sexual violence committed by Hamas during the October 7 attacks.

Tlaib has also encouraged significant Democratic support for candidates who are uncommitted to endorsing Israel, voicing her discontent with then-President Joe Biden’s support. Notably, she was part of a coalition of Michigan Democrats that refrained from denouncing a “Death to America” chant in April 2024.
