Jane Fonda Calls for Action Ahead of “No Kings” Protests
Actress and activist Jane Fonda is encouraging Americans to join the upcoming “No Kings” protests, expressing her concern that the nation is facing an “existential” threat under President Donald Trump’s administration. She is urging her supporters to take part in the movement this Saturday.
On a recent episode of MS NOW’s “Inside with Jen Psaki,” the 88-year-old Fonda shared, “People are feeling hopeless.” She emphasized that “we are the majority and we must act as such.”
Fonda framed the protest as an opportunity for new activists to get involved, suggesting that participants should “bring five people” who have never protested before. She believes this rally could help in “building community” and represents “a first step” toward larger endeavors.
While “NO KINGS” describes itself as leaderless, internal documents reveal a more organized structure.
Fonda remarked, “It’s like dipping your toes. This is a first step, so we should all go tomorrow, but let’s not just stop there. Let’s invite others who have never participated in a protest before.” She highlighted the benefits of meeting new people as a way to strengthen community connections. “President Trump might be indifferent to the issues we face since they don’t impact him financially, but they affect us,” she noted.
Linking the protests to climate change concerns, Fonda expressed urgency, stating that the country is facing an “existential crisis” and she feels “grateful to be alive” to combat it.
Fonda underscored the significance of this moment, reminding everyone, “It is in our hands. We can save the future.” She stressed that climate change is often overlooked and warned that “fossil fuels are everywhere.”
Reflecting on history, Fonda added that future generations will remember how current citizens reacted. “What an exciting thing to be able to participate in this event now,” she said, emphasizing the importance of taking action. “I don’t want my children or grandchildren to judge me for not doing my best.” Everyone, she insists, has a role to play.
Fonda has a long-standing history of political activism, notably her controversial stance against the Vietnam War, which drew considerable backlash and continues to define her public persona. Throughout her career, she has been critical of Trump, rallying fellow entertainers to take a stand against him during various events.
