Jane Fonda Criticizes Academy’s Tribute to Robert Redford

Jane Fonda has expressed her discontent with the Academy’s decision to have Barbra Streisand honor Robert Redford during the memorial segment of the recent awards ceremony.

Following the event, Fonda lightheartedly remarked that she had “a lot more to say” about Redford, owing to their extensive history together. She questioned, “Why did Streisand do that for Redford?” pointing out that she had shared four films with him, while Streisand only worked with him once. “I have more to say,” she added.

Fonda described Redford as “the most gorgeous human being” with “great values,” emphasizing his significant contributions to cinema. She noted that he truly transformed indie film. The two’s friendship spanned over five decades, starting with their collaboration in Neil Simon’s “Barefoot in the Park,” which premiered on Broadway before becoming a film in 1967. After Redford’s passing, Fonda released a heartfelt statement about him.

In her statement, Fonda expressed her devastation over his death, reflecting on how he meant the world to her. She fondly remembered him as a beautiful person, embodying all that America needs to strive for.

Streisand, who co-starred with Redford in “The Way We Were,” reminisced about their connection both on and off-screen after his death. She stated that every filming day was filled with excitement and joy, acknowledging their contrasting personalities but a mutual desire to understand each other better.

Streisand recalled their last meeting over lunch, where they discussed art and exchanged drawings. She concluded by expressing her gratitude for having worked with such a unique individual.

Redford passed away at his home in Sundance, Utah, on September 16, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. His family has requested privacy during this time and noted that he will be sorely missed.

Remembered for his iconic roles in films like “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and “The Sting,” the Hollywood legend’s impact on cinema will not be forgotten.
