Japan Is Taking a Stronger Stance on Iran Compared to NATO

Trump Recognizes Japan’s Stance on Iran

WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump remarked on Thursday that Japan is “getting serious” about the situation with Iran, in contrast to other NATO members.

In an Oval Office meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Trump compared Japan’s commitment to that of NATO countries when a reporter questioned him about Japan’s support regarding Iran. He stated:

“Today we will talk about it. We have had great support and relationships with Japan in all aspects. And based on the statements that were given to us yesterday and the day before yesterday in relation to Japan, I believe that Japan, unlike NATO, is taking it seriously.”

During her opening comments, Takaichi highlighted the current security challenges in the Middle East.

“Right now, we are indeed facing a very tough security environment in the Middle East, and globally, the economy is on the brink of a significant downturn because of what’s happening,” she noted.

“Despite this backdrop, I firmly believe that you, Donald, are the only one who can bring about peace globally. I am ready to collaborate with various partners in the international community to meet our shared objectives,” she added.

Trump reiterated that the international community cannot afford to tolerate Iran’s progress in nuclear arms, affirming that Japan is pressing Iran to halt its nuclear ambitions and is connecting with “other partners worldwide.”

“Moreover, Japan condemns Iran’s actions, including aggressions toward neighboring areas and the effective closing of the Strait of Hormuz,” Takaichi conveyed to Trump.

She mentioned that Japan’s Foreign Minister Motegi had directly communicated with his Iranian counterpart, urging Iran to cease such behaviors while also proposing measures to alleviate pressures on global energy markets.

Takaichi also pointed out the increasingly challenging security landscape in the Indo-Pacific region, expressing her eagerness for discussions with Trump, particularly regarding “cooperation in economic security in vital sectors like energy and rare earth materials.”

During their conversation, President Trump made it clear that he has no plans to deploy ground troops to Iran.
