Japan's Conservative LDP Secures Unprecedented Supermajority Win

Historic Victory for Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party

Japan’s conservative Liberal Democratic Party, under the leadership of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, achieved a significant election triumph on Sunday, securing a two-thirds supermajority in the House of Representatives.

The party won 316 out of the 465 available seats in the Diet, a remarkable increase from the 198 seats they held prior to the election. This results in the party’s most successful electoral performance in history, granting them the power to pass constitutional amendments and other significant legislation that previously faced rejection in the Senate.

This victory marks the first instance in postwar Japan where a single party holds more representation than any other in the House of Representatives. The Liberal Democratic Party’s performance is noted as the best since 1986, when they won 304 seats.

Prime Minister Takaichi, who assumed office in October 2025, had dissolved the House of Representatives in mid-January, leading to this snap election.

Just hours before the elections, former President Donald Trump expressed his support for Takaichi through a post on social media, remarking on her coalition government’s efforts and stating that she would not disappoint the Japanese people.

Takaichi reciprocated with gratitude in both English and Japanese, thanking Trump for his words of support, and expressed eagerness to visit the White House in the spring to enhance the Japan-U.S. alliance.

She emphasized the deep trust and cooperation between the two nations, highlighting their potential to foster peace and prosperity together.

In a conversation with NHK, Takaichi mentioned that she does not plan to alter the current cabinet, which has only been in place for a short time and is yielding positive outcomes for the nation.

On fiscal matters, she pointed out broad political support for reducing the consumption tax, particularly on food products and other items. She urged the formation of a bipartisan forum to expedite discussions on this important issue.

Following the election results, the Nikkei 225 stock index surged significantly, hitting a new intraday high above 57,000 yen.

Takaichi is set to visit the United States on March 19 to meet with Trump, which the Japanese government has described as a meaningful engagement aimed at reaffirming Japan-U.S. solidarity.
