A Texas man who decapitated his wife just months after they were married has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the heinous crime.
The trial of Jared James Dicus ended Wednesday, more than a year after he decapitated his 21-year-old bride, Angie Diaz, in their home near the Houston suburb of Magnolia.
Dicus, now 23, pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 40 years in prison, with a minimum parole date of 2043. ABC13 reported.
Authorities discovered Diaz’s body in a pool of blood after being stabbed multiple times in January 2023. Her severed head was found in the shower.
The couple only just got married in October 2022, but their wedding was a surprise for friends and family.
The Waller County Sheriff’s Office said last year that Dicus confessed to killing his spouse after the murder.
“Waller County does not tolerate domestic violence, and heinous crimes like this will not go unpunished,” Waller County District Attorney Shawn Whitmore said in a statement last week, according to the department.
“We seek justice for victims of domestic violence and send a message to perpetrators that we are fighting for them.”
The plea agreement prevents Dicus from appealing his conviction and sentence, and was reached after Dicus was found fit to stand trial amid questions about his mental competency.
Prosecutors also spoke with Diaz’s family before moving forward with the plea deal, ABC13 reported.
